New Skaters

Dreaming of taking to the track with the Northern Brisbane Rollers, but not sure where to start?

Join our Development Program!

Formerly called Fresh Meat, our Development Program teaches you everything you need to know to get involved in roller derby. Our Development Program is perfect for those who want to compete on track as a skater, become a referee, or just learn new skating skills in a fun, inclusive and supportive environment.

Keep an eye out on our Facebook page for information sessions on upcoming intakes. These off-skates sessions give you all the info you need before signing up.

If you want to know more about the Development Program and how you can get started, contact us. We’ll let you know when the next rotation is starting and all the other info you’ll need.

New Referees

Everyone is welcome to be referees. Referees are required to wear skates and safety gear (though mouth guards are optional for refs), so should prepare as new skaters. As a ref you get to wear the cool zebra stripes and wave your arms in wacky ways.

Since our refs start out as new skaters they also get to start out in Fresh Meat and get comfortable on skates calling penalties and the like. You also get to learn other officiating roles by participating as a Non Skating Official (NSO) at training and get on-the-job experience. This makes sure our bouts are fair and smooth.

If you want to check out the rules and gain the upper hand on the official hand signals please check out the WTFDA website.

Officials

Officials work closely with the Referees though are not required to wear skates. Without them our bouts simply could not run.

There are various non-skating official (NSO) roles: You could be a Scorekeeper and work closely with the Jammer Ref to determine how many points that team is really getting. Maybe discipline is your thing? – You could be a Penalty Tracker and keep track of how many illegal, but awesome, actions the skaters perform, or be a Penalty Timing Official and ensure the skaters serve the right time for their crime. Like Playing God? – Control time; be the Jam Timer (You even get to blow the whistle). Just want to score? Learn to communicate with the Scorekeepers of both teams and be the Scoreboard Operator.

The best thing about being an NSO? Whether on the sideline or in the middle with the referees, you literally have the best seat in the house!

We love our NSOs and we’re always on the hunt for more – get in touch with us today to get involved!
